Pacific Northwest Horticultural Conservancy (PNHC) has given up its bid to buy Heronswood Nursery in Kingston, Wash., The Kitsap Sun reported. The 15-acre garden was founded by renowned plantsmen Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones.
In 2000, Pennsylvania-based W. Atlee Burpee Co. bought the nursery, and in 2006 it closed the grounds because the company said it was losing money. Last year, PNHC offered to buy the property for $1.7 million, and the company countered, asking for $2.7 million.
A feasibility study showed that the costs of running the nursery would be prohibitive, and the property is back on the market with a listing price of $3 million.
