Perennial Plant Association named Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ (golden Japanese forest grass) as its 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year.
This clump-forming deciduous grass produces arching, linear leaves that are bright yellow with narrow, longitudinal lime-green stripes. The leaves often develop a reddish tinge in fall. Plants reach 12-18 inches tall and 18-36 inches wide. It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9.
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is the 2008 Perennial Plant of the Year.

We have been selling this plant for a couple of years. I guess I don't understand the perennial plant of the year designation. It seems to be a little late and the only people who seem to care are people in the profession. Maybe in other parts of the country its a big deal but here my customers seem indifferent.

I am creating a memorial garden for my Golden Retriever, Sarah, that I had to put to sleep 2 weeks ago. I am trying to locate perennials that have "Sarah" in the name. I am also trying to locate a crepe myrtle (established not seedling) called "Sarah's Favorite". I live in Maryland.
